What it Means to be an Oak Team Member
Understanding what it means to work for a small, locally-owned business like Oak is essential because it can differ significantly from working for a large corporation. We want each person on our team to be connected and aligned with our work, as well as motivated and inspired to do their best for our team, our business and our patients every day.
-
You are one of the KEY people in a small team (a big fish in a small pond).
Working for a small, locally-owned business means we have a smaller team; each person is an essential part of that team. Very different from large organizations, where there may be 50 people doing the same job. You will be one of a few who do the job you do at Oak. We hope that you recognize the pride and satisfaction in having a team that truly relies on you and on each other!
-
You’ll be closer to our mission.
In a small business, it’s easier to see what we do and why we do it. You’ll be able to see the impact that each person on our team has, and you’ll also be able to see the impact that we can collectively make on the community. When our team is very passionate and connected to what we do every day, we’re going to do better, go above and beyond for each patient/customer and make magic happen!
-
At times, you may wear many hats (but you’ll learn a lot in the process).
A small business stays afloat by putting together hard-working teams of people who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and find solutions. Instead of delegating tasks to another department or outsourcing, our team will often problem-solve to figure out how to get things done—and learn a lot.
-
You’ll connect more with the people around you.
As a small business, we have closer-knit teams, managers that work directly with you every day and owners that you see a lot more than you might in a large company. We hope this gives everyone a sense of teamwork, camaraderie, and connection to one another as we strive to build and operate our business and serve our patients.
-
You are welcome and encouraged to share your ideas.
In a small business, you have the opportunity to stretch your creativity and share ideas that you have to make the business even better. We are excited by and encourage our team to voice their ideas and opinions, and in doing so, you will feel a sense of ownership, pride and satisfaction. We can move more quickly and nimbly.
-
As a small business, the decision-makers are right here with you, meaning we can often make decisions and act on them quickly.
This means we can respond to the needs of our community or new ideas quite quickly when they are aligned with our goals. The owners and operators of small businesses are used to making decisions, moving quickly and getting creative to get things done. There’s no red tape in a small business.
-
We’re more flexible and accommodating.
We care about the people who are a part of our team, which means that we will always try to accommodate your needs. We don’t have a big office policy to answer to, we understand that our team has wonderful, full lives outside of work and we will always do our best to be flexible and responsive to that.
-
Your work has a positive impact on the community that we live and work.
When a small business thrives and succeeds, it positively impacts the community we all live in and love. Profits do not go to some head corporate office in Toronto; they stay here in this community. Small businesses give back to the community when they’re profitable, and you are a part of making that happen! Your work every day at a small business makes the community strong and more vibrant.
